CORE CURRICULUM

MFI M- Mermaid

Objective:
A taste of mermaid life for absolute beginners. Familiarize yourself with basic mermaid knowledge, equipment and safety knowledge. Wear on your mermaid tail and learn the basic skills to be a real-life mermaid in the water.

Content: Half-day (2-3 hours)
1 Theory Session: Prepare your mind for a whole new concept of mermaiding. Learn about the history of mermaids and benefits of being a mermaid, and essential knowledge about equipment, safety, basic underwater tricks and tricks and all secrets of being a mermaid.

1 Pool Session: A session combining land and pool exercises. It covers fundamental theory, dry warm-up and stretching, basic mermaid swimming movements and static postures.

Pre-requisites:
• 12 years old or above (guardian consent required for students under age 18)

MFI M1 - Advanced Mermaid

Objective:
Total transformation into a mermaid, learn the essential knowledge and underwater skills of a real-life mermaid . Upon graduation, you be equipped with basic underwater performance techniques and demonstrate high level of performance ability with personal edge.

Content: 2 days (10-12 hours)
1 Theory Session: Prepare your mind for a whole new concept of mermaiding. Learn about the history of mermaids and benefits of being a mermaid, and essential knowledge about equipment, safety, breath-hold, buoyancy control, water entrance skills, underwater postures & tricks and all secrets of being a mermaid.

1 Studio Session: Prepare your body on land before mermaiding underwater. Learn how to adjust and stretch your body, find your own mersona and demonstrate a better body language and expression, for better underwater performance.

3 Pool Sessions: It is time to take what you have learned to the water. Learn how to swim like a mermaid professionally and practice underwater safety and rescue skills. Other advanced exercises also include: buoyancy control, hair and facial control, body language and expression, such as static and dynamic skills, giving you the grace of a mermaid in the water.

    • Static Routine: Angel Dive – Hair Control – Titanic – Needle –Swan –Hello – Angel Spin Up
    • Dynamic Routine: Dolphin Dive – Forward Swim – Back Roll – Back Swim – Kiss – Hello – Angel Spin Up
  • Mermaid Swim 25m (Forward & Backward)
  • Water Surface Break 1 min
  • Water Surface Rescue (15m towing distance)
  • Written Exam (75% or above)

MFI M2 - Master Mermaid

Objective:
This course takes mermaiding to a higher standard. You will further develop body control and expression, refine further on your postures and embrace being a Mermaid, preparing yourself for professional mermaid shooting and performance. As a certified M2, you will be considered as a Professional Underwater Performer that is capable in doing coherent and continuous performance routines, dual or group performance items, choreography skills in performances and planning for related underwater makeup and outfit.

Content: 3-4 days
1 Theory Session: Learn more about the historical background and evolution of performance mermaids, underwater outfits and makeup, details of arranging performances and productions. Learn advanced mermaid underwater tricks, performance and competition requirements and skills, and the concept of mermaid as a lifestyle and ocean ambassador.

1 Studio Session: Practicing advanced mermaid techniques on land, further strengthening and brushing up of your personal mersona in body expression. Choreograph your own performance with music and incubate good chemistry with your partner/ team.

4 Pool Sessions: Learn more mermaid swimming styles, dynamic and static tricks, partnered/team performance, safety and rescue. You will demonstrate what you have learned in course and choreograph your own performance at the end.

• 12 years old or above (guardian consent required for students under age 18)
• MFI 1 Certificate Holder

Assessment Requirements

  • Complete 3 Underwater Routines
    • Solo Routine with Fin:
      • Dolphin dive – Forward Swim/ Tornado/ Quick Swim Spin through the Hoop (optional) – Back Roll x2 – Scorpio Underwater –Swirl – Blowing Kiss – Angel Spin Up – Break (max 20 secs) – Angel dive – Needle – Lying Down – Side/ Tornado Swim – Bubble Ring – Swim Up Elegantly – Float On Surface
    • Dual/ Partner Routine with Fin:
      • Dolphin Dive from Two Sides–Forward Swim towards Partner–Both Hands Pushing Against–Back Roll Together (on the same level)–Look at Each Other–Give Me Five–(options)
        • Option 1: Forward Swim to Opposite Direction – Look at Each Other – Angel Spin Up – Float on Surface
        • Option 2: Tornado Swim Up with your Partner – Float on Surface
  • Choreograph your own 2 minutes performance (including 30 secs on land)
  • Mermaid Swim 25m (Side & Tornado)
  • Water Threading (With Fin & Without Fin) 1 min
  • Rescue With Fin (Depth within 6 meters and towing for 15 Meters distance)
  • Written Exam (75% or above)

MFI M3 - Mermaid Producer

Objective:
From a “Performer” to a “Performance Creator”, mastering the creation of a mermaid/ underwater performance or UW shooting. As a Mermaid Producer, you represent the highest level in MFI education, considered to have a rich knowledge and execution ability in research, plan and execute performance and shooting procedures and rundown.

Content:

1 Underwater Performance/ Shooting Project/ Competition

2 Theory Sessions: Procedures and planning needed for a performance/ shooting. Dealing and handling of different shooting and performance environments, safety in ocean and ocean conservation, mermaid styling and project presentation

2 Studio Sessions: Planning and rehearsal for performance/ shooting project on land

3 Confined/ Open Water Sessions: Planning and rehearsal for performance/ shooting project, safety support and rescue.

Pre-requisite:
• 12 years old or above (guardian consent required for students under age 18)
• MFI 2 Certificate Holder

JUNIOR MERMAID (6 – 16 years old)

MFI J1 – Mermaid Explorer

Objective: A taste of mermaid life for absolute beginners. Familiarize yourself with the mermaid tail and learn the basic skills to be a real-life mermaid in the water. Make your mermaid dream come true and explore the underwater world. 

1 Theory Session: Discover knowledge of our Ocean and make friends with sea creatures. 

4 Pool Sessions: Learn how to Swim like a Mermaid and blow kisses & hearts underwater. Graduated Mermaid Explorers will be able to do basic mermaid swim and basic land/ underwater poses! 

Prerequisite: 

6-16 years old (Guardians are required to accompany during activities)

Able to swim 25m freestyle or breastroke

MFI J2 – Mermaid Pioneers

Objective: Let’s level up! Not just swimming like a mermaid underwater but transform into a performing mermaid! 

1 Theory Session: Being a true mermaid to care for our ocean and environment. Let’s learn proper waste classification, understand the marine life cycle and explore different sea plants. 4 Pool Sessions: Learn advanced static postures, water entry skills, buoyancy control, facial and hair control. Graduated Mermaid Pioneers will be able to perform his/ her own underwater static routine!

 

Prerequisite: 

6-16 years old (Guardians are required to accompany during activities)

MFI J1 Certificate Holder

Able to swim 25m freestyle or breastroke

MFI J3 – Mermaid Star

Objective: Being a J3 graduate is to become a true Star, shining bright and stunning. You will further develop body control underwater for the precise mermaid movements underwater. Embrace mermaid as your identity and prepare yourself for choreographing your own mermaid performance and perform dual mermaid routine! Graduated Mermaid Stars will be considered as Professional Underwater Performers that are capable in choreographing routines.

1 Theory Session:  Learn seafood guidelines and gear yourself up as an Ocean Plastic Warrior and solve ocean crisis

4 Pool Sessions: Become a Mermaid Star to perform high-level UW tricks and showcase both solo & group mermaid performances. Choreograph your own Mermaid Performance!
